Welcome to Hedland goes online to keep community Covid-safe

This year’s Welcome to Hedland Community Expo will be shifting to an online platform to keep the community COVID-safe.

The Social Pinpoint platform will host digital stalls and performers in place of the physical event in South Hedland Town Square, allowing community members to access an online map and discover what Hedland has to offer via any online device.

The Town decided that hosting an online platform was appropriate in consideration of increasing community transmission of COVID-19 in the Pilbara.

Stallholders and performers will have the opportunity to submit an online profile, including links to their websites and social media channels and to raise their profile in the community.

The platform will be available for a minimum of six months, serving as a resource for newcomers to Hedland.

Applications for online stallholders and performers will be released in April and the platform will go live in June.

Mayor Peter Carter said the online platform demonstrated how the Town was adapting its event delivery during the pandemic.

“Welcome to Hedland Online is a platform the Town is hosting from June, in lieu of the physical event traditionally held in South Hedland Town Square.

“We think it’s important to limit mass gatherings where possible to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the community, so the online platform will enable anyone to log on and discover all that Hedland has to offer without the need for a mass gathering.

“We expect restrictions to ease in the months ahead, therefore physical events to look forward to include the Sunset Food Markets and Spinifex Spree Carnival.”
