WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET A NEEDLE STICK INJURY?
- Wash it: wash the area gently with soap and running tap water as soon as possible.
- Cover it: apply an antispetic and a clean dressing.
- Report it: obtain prompt medical advice from your local doctor or hospital emergency department, preferably within 24 hours.
- Dispose it: dispose of the needle safely.
what to do if you find a discarded needle?
- Do not be alarmed.
- Get a rigid walled, puncture resistant, plastic container, with a well-secured, screw top lid (not glass, aluminium, or frosted plastic).
- Bring the container to the needle and place it on the ground.
- Pick up the needle from the blunt end - do not touch the sharp point.
- Do not try to re-cap the needle.
- Put the needle, point first, into the container.
- Tightly seal the container.
- Put the container in a domestic rubbish bin.
