Outdoor Storytime, Under the Yarning Tree is a vibrant, award-winning and interactive literacy program held at South Hedland Library.
Launched in 2023 and inspired by a successful Indigenous literacy pilot program in 2022, this much-loved initiative brings children, families, and the community together.
All sessions are designed to be inclusive, free-flowing and flexible, with activities catering to a range of ages and abilities.
- For younger children, it’s a chance to build on fine motor skills or foundational skills like sitting attentively and socialising; while
- Older children can enjoy more challenging craft and interactive storytelling.
Each month, children and families gather outdoors to enjoy stories, songs, sensory play, and craft activities, many of which are led by local Aboriginal presenters who share stories in their language or speak about their cultural heritage.
Held in collaboration with local schools, childcare centres and community organisations, Outdoor Storytime creates a fun and welcoming space to support early childhood education across Hedland.
All sessions are held outdoors during the cooler months, under shady trees and offer free‑flowing activities, creative and sensory play, music, and, of course, stories.
