Hamilton Road Upgrade and Reconstruction Project

The Town of Port Hedland will commence the Hamilton Road Upgrade Project on 6 October 2026.

The project was released for tender in May 2026, with a preferred contractor appointed at the August 2026 Ordinary Council Meeting.

The upgrade of Hamilton Road between Hudson Way and Forrest Circle includes:

  • Construction of two new roundabouts
  • Changes to the existing road layout
  • Landscaping and irrigation improvements
  • Relocation of street lighting where required

The project will improve road safety, reduce congestion and enhance traffic flow along a key transport corridor servicing the Wanangkura Stadium precinct, Kevin Scott Oval, the future Aquatic Centre, and the planned Hedland Village development.

One of the new roundabouts will provide access to the future aquatic facility and Wanangkura Stadium precinct, while the second will create a key entry point into the future Hedland Village development.

As part of the works, landscaping and irrigation upgrades will create a consistent streetscape between Hudson Way and Forrest Circle, building on previous improvements undertaken throughout the area.

The Town of Port Hedland acknowledges and thanks Compass Group for its support of the Hamilton Road upgrade, particularly its contribution to the landscaping elements that help create a more attractive and welcoming public space.

Hamilton Road will remain open throughout construction, with traffic management measures in place to ensure safe access for road users. This will include temporary traffic controls and reduced speed limits where required.

Construction is expected to take approximately 10 months, subject to weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.

What to Expect During Construction

Residents and road users may experience some temporary disruptions while these works are underway. We appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Construction Noise and Dust

During approved working hours, construction activities may generate temporary noise, dust and vibration. This may include machinery operation; excavation works and truck movements.

Working Hours

Construction is scheduled between:

7.00am to 7.00pm, Monday to Saturday

No works will be undertaken on Sundays or Public Holidays unless otherwise approved.

Footpath Access

For safety reasons, parts of the work area, including sections of footpath, may be temporarily closed.

Clearly signed pedestrian detours will be in place. Please follow all traffic management and safety signage.

Traffic Management

Temporary traffic management measures will be implemented throughout the project, including reduced speed limits.

At times, traffic will operate under a contraflow arrangement, where vehicles use one side of the road to accommodate construction activities.

Emergency services will maintain priority access at all times.

Access to Properties and Facilities

Access to nearby properties and community facilities will be maintained throughout the construction period.

Temporary access ramps and other measures will be installed where required to ensure safe and convenient access.
