The Town of Port Hedland has recorded its strongest month for building activity in more than a decade, with 61 building applications processed in July 2026 - the highest monthly total since 2014. The applications represent a total construction value of approximately $35.22 million.

The Town acknowledges the support of Minister for Housing and Works, John Carey MLA and Member for Pilbara, Kevin Michel MLA, whose ongoing advocacy and commitment to addressing regional housing challenges has helped progress the project. 

With just days to go, the Ship to Shore 2026 Community Fun Run is shaping up to be the largest yet, with already more than 1,000 registered runners, jogger and walkers.

The project aims to transform South Hedland Town Square into a greener, safer and more vibrant community hub.

Evaluation results highlighted the program's ongoing impact, with all surveyed attendees indicating the event was important for their community and that they would participate again. Student feedback also showed increased confidence, creativity and engagement in learning.

Held every five years, the Census provides vital information used by governments and service providers to plan housing, healthcare, education, transport, community services and infrastructure.
