Following record community participation and overwhelming positive feedback in 2025, Elected Members endorsed continued support for Scribblers on the Road Festival at Wednesday night's Ordinary Council Meeting.
The proposed $50,000 sponsorship contribution, for inclusion in the Council's 2026/27 Annual Budget, will help continue a successful partnership with FORM WA that has connected thousands of local children, families and educators with authors, storytellers, artists and performers over the past three years.
Scribblers on the Road is the regional extension of Australia’s only state-wide festival dedicated entirely to children’s literature, storytelling and creative learning.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the program had become a much-loved community event that continued to deliver meaningful outcomes for local families.
"Scribblers on the Road has grown into one of our community's most successful, anticipated and well-loved programs,” Mayor Behrend said.
“It’s a fantastic event that provides children and families with access to free, high-quality creative, cultural and educational experiences right here in Port Hedland.
"The program not only supports literacy and learning but also creates opportunities for connection, and storytelling, while showcasing the incredible talent of local artists, storytellers and performers.”
In 2025, the program reached about 2,230 participants across the Pilbara, including 1,180 students, 100 teachers and 15 schools. More than 900 people attended the Family Fun Day in Port Hedland, while 35 local artists, performers and storytellers were engaged throughout the program.
Evaluation results highlighted the program's ongoing impact, with all surveyed attendees indicating the event was important for their community and that they would participate again.
Student feedback also showed increased confidence, creativity and engagement in learning.
The 2026 program is proposed to continue partnerships with organisations including Wangka Maya Aboriginal Language Centre and Spinifex Hill Studio, ensuring local stories, language and culture remain central to the program's delivery.
This continued sponsorship aligns with the Town’s commitment to supporting community wellbeing, creativity, lifelong learning and accessible cultural experiences for residents across Port Hedland and the wider Pilbara.
