Public Health Plan

The Town is proud to announce the endorsement of our Public Health Plan, a strategic roadmap designed to support the health and wellbeing of our community now and into the future.

How we got here

This plan was shaped by you - our community. Through an extensive engagement process, including surveys, workshops, and consultations, we listened to your priorities and concerns. Your feedback provided valuable insights into the health challenges and opportunities that matter most.

What is public health and what is the Town responsible for?

The World Health Organisation defines Public Health as 'All organised measures (whether public or private) to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life among the population as a whole. Its activities aim to provide conditions in which people can be healthy and focus on entire populations, not on individual patients or diseases."

Public Health can also be influenced by social determinants of health including but not limited to demographics, education, employment status, housing, social inclusion, early childhood development, and access to food. Public Health attempts to promote the health and well-being of the entire population rather than just individuals.

Public health is a shared responsibility across all levels of government. While the State and Federal Governments set broad health policies and deliver major health services, local governments play a vital role in creating healthy environments and supporting community wellbeing. This includes initiatives such as promoting active lifestyles, ensuring safe public spaces, managing environmental health, and fostering social inclusion. Our Public Health Plan reflects this responsibility by focusing on actions that make a real difference at the local level.

Developing the plan

Using the information gathered, we worked collaboratively with stakeholders, health experts and consultants to develop a plan that reflects our local needs. The result is a comprehensive framework that aligns with State Public Health objectives while focusing on practical actions tailored for our Town.

Endorsement

The Public Health Plan has now been formally endorsed by Council, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to creating a healthier, more connected community. This plan is not just a document, it’s a promise to take action.
