The Town of Port Hedland is reminding residents, businesses and community organisations that cyclone preparedness is everyone's responsibility, with a targeted cyclone season awareness campaign set to roll out from the end of October and continue throughout the season.
The campaign aims to ensure important information is delivered in a timely, accurate and consistent manner, helping the community stay informed, prepared and aware of their roles and responsibilities before, during and after a cyclone event.
Mayor Jacinta Behrend says building a prepared and resilient community starts long before a cyclone warning is issued.
"Living in the Pilbara means cyclone season is a reality we need to be prepared for every year, and the actions we take now can make a significant difference when an alert is called.
"We live in one of the most cyclone-prone regions in the world, which means cyclone preparedness is everyone's responsibility.
“By taking the time to prepare your home, family, business and emergency plans now, you'll be better equipped to respond when a severe weather event is called.
"Our goal is to help build a cyclone-ready community by providing clear, trusted and timely information that supports preparation, response and recovery throughout the season.” Mayor Behrend said.
As part of the campaign, the Town will provide regular preparedness information, practical resources and updates across a range of communication channels, ensuring key messages reach a broad and diverse audience.
To help ensure important cyclone preparedness information reaches as many people as possible, the Town has delivered a cyclone information flyer to residential mailboxes across the community, directing residents to key resources and preparedness information.
Printed cyclone preparedness booklets are also available from the Civic Centre, South Hedland Library, Port Hedland Library and the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub.
Throughout the cyclone season, information and updates will also be shared across a wide range of channels, including posters at Town facilities and public spaces, advertisements in the North West Telegraph, digital screens at local shopping centres, the Town's website, social media platforms, targeted email communications and other official communication channels.
Residents are encouraged to use the lead-up to cyclone season to review their household emergency plans, prepare emergency kits, secure their properties and familiarise themselves with official warning and information sources.
