Concept designs for the South Hedland Town Centre Activation project were endorsed at Wednesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, marking a significant milestone in the project.
The project aims to transform South Hedland Town Square into a greener, safer and more vibrant community hub.
Developed in response to extensive community consultation undertaken through the South Hedland Place Plan, the concept design aims to create a people-focused town centre that encourages community connection, supports local businesses and enhances the overall visitor experience.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the project would deliver on the community's vision for a more welcoming and activated town centre.
"This is an exciting step towards creating a town centre that people want to spend time in,” Mayor Behrend said.
“Whether that's meeting friends, attending events, supporting local businesses or simply enjoying a more comfortable and attractive public space.
"The concept design directly reflects what the community told us was important, including more shade, better accessibility, improved safety and increased greenery throughout the precinct."
The endorsed concept includes the closure of Wise Terrace and Rason Link to prioritise pedestrian movement, as well as new shade structures, seating, landscaping, upgraded lighting, the potential for additional CCTV infrastructure, and also irrigation improvements to support expanded green spaces.
As part of the resolution, Elected Members also agreed to consider the inclusion of $2.735 million in the proposed 2026/27 Annual Budget, with the project anticipated to be delivered across two financial years at a total cost of $4.770 million.
Once completed, the South Hedland Town Centre Activation project will establish a more liveable, sustainable and well-utilised town centre aligned with Council's long-term vision for South Hedland.
