Tropical Cyclone Ilsa update

Published on Thursday, 13 April 2023 at 2:15:00 PM

The below comments can be attributed to Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter:

“The Port Hedland community is preparing for cyclonic weather as Tropical Cyclone Ilsa continues to approach.

We have all been closely following advice from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and taking the required action.

This has included preparing our Town of Port Hedland facilities over the last few days, such as removing shade sails from our aquatic centres, securing equipment and putting sandbags in place.

This morning the Town of Port Hedland moved to close facilities so people can prepare to shelter from the cyclone.

As expected, the community is on alert, and everyone has been making the necessary preparations. People have been moving barbeques, outdoor furniture, and wheelie bins inside to avoid these becoming hazardous in strong and damaging winds.

This can be an unsettling time - while many people in our community may be familiar with cyclones, this could be new for people who may not have been in Hedland for long. Hedland is a transient town and we all work together to ensure everyone has the information they need to stay safe.

I urge everyone to touch base with friends, family and neighbours and keep an eye on trusted sources of information including the emergency.wa.gov.au website and by listening to ABC Local Radio.”
