Town of Port Hedland prepares for sporting precinct

Published on Friday, 5 May 2023 at 10:00:42 AM

The Town of Port Hedland is making progress on an exciting redevelopment of South Hedland’s sporting precinct.

The Town has engaged contractors to demolish the building that was formerly home to the Finucane Island Sports and Recreation Club on Karst Elbow, South Hedland.

Removal of the building will make way for the development of the South Hedland Integrated Sports Hub, which will include multi-use sports fields, a large multi-use pavilion, outdoor covered courts, diamond sports fields and pavilion and a new aquatics centre.

The building has been closed to the public since 2021 after ongoing building issues. Since its closure, the building has been an ongoing target for littering, vandalism and antisocial behaviour.

Demolition will begin in the coming weeks, with demolition works expected to be completed within a few months.

Mayor Peter Carter said he hoped new developments would provide sports and community clubs with additional opportunities.

“Facilities like the soon-to-be opened Port Hedland Community Centre, expanded JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub and the planned $300 million Sports and Arts Precinct in South Hedland will open many doors for sporting clubs,” Mayor Carter said.

“Port Hedland is a town that thrives on sport, and I’m delighted to be part of a Council that is making progress on positive projects to enrich this sport and recreation activity.”

“We are committed to supporting sporting clubs with facilities where possible, and finding solutions to challenges that may impact on membership and activity.”
