Town expands grants programs

Hedland community groups, businesses and individuals will benefit from an expanded grants program being implemented by the Town of Port Hedland - totalling $650,000.

Councillors at the recent Ordinary Council Meeting endorsed a refreshed Town Community Grants Program and the introduction of an Economic Development and Diversification Fund for the 2023/24 financial year.

Mayor Peter Carter said the Town was streamlining its grants programs while increasing the total amount available to the community.

“After community consultation, we have reviewed and simplified the Community Grants Program and created different funding opportunities to meet the current needs of our community,” he said.

“The Town is committed to providing services which benefit our community and the updated grants program offers terrific opportunities for businesses, not-for-profit organisations and community groups.”

The new Economic Development and Diversification Fund has $200,000 allocated for a Business Development Stream which is designed to support local businesses and organisations generate new revenue opportunities; and an Industry Development Stream to support new or expanded businesses and organisations.

“The Town wants to help Hedland businesses expand and thrive – to create employment opportunities and diversify our economy,” Mayor Carter said.

“These two funding streams will help businesses with feasibility studies or to develop business cases, to expand their operations.”

The following funding streams will be available in the Community Grants Program:

  • Community Partnerships Grant $150,000 (grants from $500 - $15,000) – to support community groups and organisations deliver events, activities and programs that enhance the Hedland community, celebrate diversity and provide opportunities to develop social cohesion and connections.
  • Community Champions Grant $50,000 (grants up to $5,000) – to provide support to ambassadors of the Town who require assistance to travel on a regional, national or international basis.
  • Placemaking Grant $100,000 (grants up to $10,000) – to empower local communities and organisations to revitalise public spaces through creative projects that enhance engagement, cultural enrichment and economic development.
  • Community Sustainability Grant $100,000 (grants from $5,000 - $25,000) – to support initiatives established in the Town of Port Hedland Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2022-27.
  • Cash for Trash $30,000 (grants up to $2,000 per clean-up) – to enable community groups and not-for-profit organisations to conduct litter clean-ups throughout the Town and to fundraise. The Town will pay $10 per bag up to a maximum of $2,000 per clean-up.
  • CCTV Rebate $20,000 (50% of all costs up to $400) – to continue the rebate scheme which supports tenants and residential property owners to install CCTV home security.

Applications for the Economic Development and Diversification Fund streams and the new Community Grants Program will open in September 2023.

Information about the Town’s new Community Grants Program will be released later this month. The Town’s current Community Grants Program will continue until 31 August 2023.
