The Town of Port Hedland has again been announced as a finalist for the Parks and Leisure Australia Awards of Excellence with Port Hedland Leisure being nominated in the Best Regional/Rural Industry Contribution Award.

Each year, Parks and Leisure Australia acknowledges excellence in the industry to celebrate and recognise the exceptional initiatives of 'the people behind the places', to highlight the social, environmental and economic benefits that leisure activities provide to the community.

The Best Regional/Rural Industry Contribution Award includes towns, small cities and areas that lie beyond the major capital cities, that make a significant contribution through community initiatives which contribute to the parks and leisure industry.

Criteria for this category includes demonstrating how the initiative addresses regional and rural social, cultural, heritage, environmental or economic issues, and shows the positive outcomes it brings to the community.

The submission also needs to detail how the initiative presents a visionary approach or innovative concept to address a specific need or issue and show the achievements and benefits to the community.

Town of Port Hedland CEO Carl Askew said the submission from the Town of Port Hedland was a great opportunity to highlight Port Hedland Leisure's facilities, programs, trained personnel and community connection.

“Port Hedland Leisure not only provides outstanding fitness facilities, but also covers a vast array of initiatives including free school holiday programs, large scale community events and inclusive CALD programs to help everyone reach their health, fitness and wellness goals while building community connection.

“Port Hedland Leisure maintains a strong organisational culture with a commitment to employee learning and development - which is demonstrated in the extensive services and programs offered to support our community.

“The Town of Port Hedland is committed to the ongoing improvement of the physical, mental and social wellbeing of our community through providing ever improving leisure and sport facilities and services for all.”
