Port and South Hedland will soon be connected through a shared cycle and pedestrian path with the Town of Port Hedland starting construction on the final link this week.
Asphalting as part of the Wilson Street Shared Path project is now underway, which involves construction of more than 6km of shared pathway that will tie Wilson Street to McGregor St and Cooke Point Drive in Port Hedland and then on to Redbank Bridge.
Currently the pathway from South Hedland finishes at Redbank Bridge.
The $1.4 million Wilson Street Shared Path project is being jointly funded by the Town of Port Hedland and Western Australia Government through the Department of Transport’s Western Australia Bicycle Network (WABN).
Mayor Peter Carter said the shared pathway was a terrific initiative.
“The linked pathway will give cyclists and pedestrians safe passage all the way from Port to South Hedland for the first time,” he said.
“The Town is committed to providing amenities that promote healthy lifestyles and the linked pathway will encourage more people to ride, walk or run between Port and South Hedland.”
The pathway is expected to be completed by June and local traffic management is in place along Wilson Street during construction.
The WABN grants are a key part of the Western Australian Bicycle Network Plan 2014-2031. This plan sets out the framework for safe cycling networks across the State.
