Funding available to combat depression and suicide

Published on Thursday, 4 August 2022 at 9:32:31 AM

Local community organisations in the Port Hedland Local Government Area can now apply for funding for short-term mental health and suicide prevention initiatives for the Hedland community.

The Town of Port Hedland has received $95,000 via the Alliance Against Depression Fund provided by WA Primary Health Alliance, to be allocated to local Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) via a community grants process.

NGOs can apply for funding funding for non-clinical initiatives that align with one or more of the 4 Alliance Against Depression Framework Pillars: 1) primary care and mental health care; 2) general public depression awareness campaign; 3) community facilitators and stakeholders and 4) patients, high risk groups and relatives. More information about the 4 Framework Pillars is available here.

Priority will be given to projects that focus on Aboriginal communities and males between the ages of 25 to 54, associated with reducing the risk of suicide.

Mayor Peter Carter encouraged local NGOs to consider how their organisation could utilise funding to foster better mental health in the community.

“I'm pleased the Town has received $95,000 via the Alliance Against Depression Fund, provided by WA Primary Health Alliance, to enable local NGOs to deliver practical, effective and solution orientated initiatives which improve the mental health and wellbeing of Hedlanders.

“Sadly, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the suicide rate among Indigenous Australians is more than double the rate of the broader population.

“As a local government, we want to support non-government organisations where we can, to implement initiatives which reduce the risk of suicidal behaviours.

“It’s important we re-focus our efforts on creating a mentally healthier Hedland which improves care for people living with depression and prevents suicidal behaviour.”
