Mayor Peter Carter has turned the first sod on Stage 2 of the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub (JDHYCH) in South Hedland; a project set to deliver better sporting amenity for the town’s youth.
Stage 2 works are projected to cost $7.5 million and will include three new multi-use courts, the installation of a shade shelter, an amphitheatre, landscaping and an accessible change room.
The project has been made possible by joint funding from the Town of Port Hedland and the WA State Government through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, which aims to increase participation in sport and recreation.
Mayor Peter Carter said the Town was delivering on its commitment to upscale public infrastructure.
“Community groups have always made the JDHYCH a dynamic space, making the most of its amenities and contributing to Hedland’s social fabric.
“The plan for outdoor multipurpose courts with shade and lighting stemmed from community feedback received during the Recreation Hub masterplan consultation process, with several local sporting organisations and community groups voicing support.
“The inclusion of covered, multipurpose courts in the masterplan reflects the need to improve the facility’s sun safety and ensures better community usability.
“Local contractors MJW Building have been awarded the work, with the project due to be completed by August 2021.
“While works are ongoing, I urge all residents to please obey signage and workers in the area, be mindful of heavy machinery and do not walk onto restricted areas.
