Core infrastructure renewal builds a better future for Hedland

Published on Tuesday, 6 April 2021 at 12:22:38 PM

Significant upgrades to Hedland’s core infrastructure assets have been achieved in the 2020/21 financial year, as part of the Town’s Renewal Program.

$2 million was invested in road reseal projects, $1.2 million was invested in footpath renewals and $700,000 was invested in kerbing renewals. Targeted funds towards concrete floodway panels through Yandeyarra Road were also invested.

8189 metres of kerb was installed throughout 26 streets, 3750 tonnes of asphalt was laid over 26 different streets and carparks, 6733 linear metres of concrete footpath was installed in 17 different locations around Port and South Hedland, and 960 square metres of concrete floodway was installed through Yule River Crossing along Yandeyarra Road to improve access following rain.

The works are part of Infrastructure Services’ five year strategy to identify and upgrade Hedland’s core infrastructure assets, improving the town’s connectivity for pedestrians and drivers.

Total renewal works for the 2020/21 year are 75% complete, with further works scheduled until the end of the financial year.

The Town partnered with Remote Concrete Group, Helpcon, MJW, Supercivil and Kat 5 Kerbing and other local contractors to deliver the suite of works.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the progress made in creating a more connected town during the 2020/21 financial year.

“Council and I are committed to investing in Hedland’s pathway and road network to build an attractive and liveable town for the future.

“The Town’s Infrastructure Services Team worked hard to strategically identify which roads, paths and kerbs should be prioritised for upgrading, meaning funds were targeted to where they were needed most.

“Infrastructure investment by local government means more local jobs on the ground, supporting economic growth and employment pathways.”
