Upcoming Richardson Street jetty replacement

Published on Friday, 21 May 2021 at 10:20:01 AM

As part of the Town’s capital works program, the replacement of Richardson Street jetty in Port Hedland will occur between Monday 19 July and Tuesday 27 July.

During this time, the jetty and ramp will be closed to both recreational and commercial users. However, access will be maintained at all times for the Volunteer Marine Rescue Services in the event of an emergency.

Works will include the replacement of the existing structure with a safer, fit-for-purpose structure which will better serve the needs of local seafarers and commerce into the future.

Local business and marine specialists, TAMS, are the project’s lead contractor.

During works, all users will be required to make alternative arrangements for launching a vessel, such as using the Finucane Island boat ramp.

The upgraded jetty will deliver a number of benefits, including improved safety, delivering better usability for recreational and commercial users, contributing to the overall quality of the port’s infrastructure assets, contributing to Port Hedland’s reputation for seafarer amenity and supporting the operational needs of industry.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the Town moving forward with the jetty replacement.

“As one of only two publicly accessible jetties in Port Hedland, it’s critical for the Richardson Street jetty to be maintained to the highest standard.

“The existing structure is dated and no longer serves the needs of the community or industry, necessitating a replacement which improves safety and usability for the future.

“Along with the Finucane Island boat ramp upgrade and Spoilbank Marina, it’s an exciting time for seafarers in Hedland.”

Important Information:

  • Commercial operators may request boat ramp access, however this must be made directly to the contractor at least 24 hours in advance of the intended vessel launch. Launching will only be permitted during daylight hours and on tides greater than 5m CD. Please email Scott Trewick via scottt@tamsgroup.com.au to request an exemption.
  • Please be advised that access will be maintained at all times for the Volunteer Marine Rescue Services in the event of an emergency.
  • Please be mindful of traffic restrictions, signage and workers in the area for the duration of the works.
