A number of community organisations across Hedland have received funding through the Town of Port Hedland’s Community Development Grant.

The objective of this grant is to support organisations at the grassroots level, who have a long term vision to shape an inclusive and liveable community.

The Youth Involvement Council (YIC) received $10,000 to deliver a program called Chill Skills, intended to build self-esteem, confidence and emotional wellbeing in teenagers.

The 514 ACU Australian Army Cadets received $9,000 to run activities which build cadet confidence and teach survival, team, first aid and leadership skills.

Hedland Community Living Association (HCLA) received $10,000 to provide more opportunities for disadvantaged community members such as children in care, at risk youth and people with a disability to access outdoor recreational activities.

Unit 2 Boxing Inc. received $10,000 to hold a community event which shines the spotlight on the next generation of up and coming youth boxers.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebling said the mental, physical and emotional wellbeing of Hedland’s young people was a key priority for the Town.

“Through the granting of these crucial funds, the Town is supporting organisations which provide life changing services for countless young people in Hedland.

“As outlined in our Strategic Community Plan, we endeavour to work towards a hardier, healthier and safer people living within an inclusive and involved community.

“Statistically, young people in regional areas are more susceptible to health and wellbeing challenges, pronounced during the time of adolescence.

“A number of these funded initiatives focus on empowering young people to take on life’s myriad of challenges, so I’m excited to see these programs in action.”
