Town of Port Hedland to Phase Out Single Use Plastics

Published on Friday, 29 March 2019 at 10:39:54 AM

Council has endorsed the development of a strategy to phase out the use of single use plastic items across all facets of Town operations, over a 12 to 24 month period.

A policy to ban the use of single use plastic at events conducted on Town property will also be developed.

These measures will only affect Town of Port Hedland staff, contractors and other representatives engaged with Town Business.

Mayor Camilo Blanco welcomed the endorsement, pointing to the global shift towards phasing out single use plastics necessitating action.

“As a Local Government, we are committed to more environmentally sustainable practices which reduce our impact on the ecosystem.

“More and more residents expect the Town to consider the environment when planning our events, procuring goods and services and operating on a day to day basis.

“A large amount of scientific evidence demonstrates the harm single use plastics pose to the environment, with many Local Governments across the country adopting similar initiatives.

“Along with positive developments at South Hedland landfill, our recycling strategy and our town-wide effort to fight littering, I’m optimistic the Town will be able to phase out single use plastics.

“I’d like to emphasise that a large cross section of stakeholders will be involved in the development of this strategy and policy, ensuring the transition is as smooth as possible.

“We will provide further updates to the community once the strategy and policy have been developed.”
