The Junction Set to Evolve Hedland’s Creative Industries

Published on Thursday, 20 June 2019 at 12:12:48 PM

Broad participation in the arts and a focus on community will be The Junction Co.’s guiding principles as they begin their journey as new managers of the Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery from Monday 1 July.

The Junction Co. was founded in June 2018 by 10 Port Hedland small business owners passionate about bringing pop-up retail and handmade workshops to the local community.

In April this year, the Town awarded the contract to The Junction Co. in a competitive tender process.

Mayor Camilo Blanco welcomed The Junction Co.’s plans for the space, saying they had met calls for more hands-on activities.

“I’m pleased the contract was awarded to a local organisation which understands the unique Pilbara identity and the important role art plays in our community.

“I’d like to thank FORM for their determination to grow the gallery in recent years and for being a friendly, familiar face in town.

“Community consultation in recent years has uncovered a desire for arts programming which gives people the chance to learn new skills and inspires our young people.

“The traditional model of the gallery as an exhibition space will be maintained, but a renewed focus on active participation will shift what it means to visit a gallery.

“The Junction Co. have a clear vision to engage, grow and empower regional creative industries, breaking the mould that the arts is the preserve of metropolitan centres.

“I’m confident The Junction Co. will build on the strong foundations built by FORM in recent years, and I look forward to the Town working with the organisation so the Gallery can reach its full potential.”

The Junction Co.’s Chairperson, Miranda Cecich, said the Gallery would endeavour to become a central hub of creative inclusivity in the Pilbara.

"The Junction Co. are honoured to be awarded the competitive tender to manage the Courthouse Gallery and serve the Pilbara community.

"We are excited to work together with the Town of Port Hedland to continue to grow the creative industries in Port Hedland, both through the Gallery and the implementation of a dynamic new Maker's Space.

"The Junction Co. team is local, and know local, and look forward to hosting your favourite activities in the West End and beyond.

The Junction Co.’s first official exhibition, BLOOM, will launch Friday 19 July. Showcasing the work of seven regional artists, it will feature interdisciplinary works in painting, sculpture, digital media and photography. It also serves as a symbolic reference to the Gallery’s next chapter.
