State Government Grants Local SLAM Funding

The JD Hardie Youth Zone’s SLAM Basketball program has received $25,000 in funding as part of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries’ and Healthway’s Targeted Participation Program (TPP).

TPP aims to engage people from various backgrounds who are statistically less likely to participate in sport and recreation.

WA Minister for Sport and Recreation, The Hon. Mick Murray MLA, said TPP benefited regional communities through programs like SLAM.

“The program provides opportunities to people who are not involved in regular sport and recreation that enable them to build on their natural talents and skills, and introduce them to a club environment.

“Projects such as these are vital to engaging young people in health, active sport and fostering connected communities.”

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the SLAM program had delivered positive outcomes for young people, particularly in South Hedland.

“I’d like to thank the State Government for prioritising the health and wellbeing of our young people, recognising the impact programs like SLAM have in our community.

“I’ve gone along to many SLAM sessions on Friday nights, with so many of our youth excited to come out every week for friendly competition.

“It’s been great to see stakeholders such as the Police and community organisations also come along and offer support and educational messages.

“With this extra funding boost, we can now confidently deliver SLAM into the future and continue offering a safe and welcoming social space in the heart of South Hedland.”
