Council has endorsed the dedication of Lot 5978 Hamilton Road, South Hedland as a public road, to facilitate land tenure resolution for a portion of the South Hedland Commons (The Commons) landscaping project.

The Commons will be the area between Spinifex Hill Studio and the Hedland Senior High School and the Matt Dann Theatre & Cinema, opposite Wanangkura Stadium.

The Commons landscaping project is a $2 million investment by the Town to improve the streetscape medians, shade, usability and amenity of South Hedland Town Centre’s entrance along Hamilton Road.

The works are planned in line with the Town’s Public Open Space Strategy and Landscape Guidelines, adopted in 2019.

The Commons will leverage the existing sporting, educational and arts facilities to improve connectivity and amenity in the area.

The Town has also been fortunate to work with FORM and Spinifex Hill to secure a Lottery West Grant to the value of $360K as well as a significant contribution of $950k from the Compass Group.

Town of Port Hedland CEO Carl Askew welcomed the Town’s progress in making Hedland a more connected and inclusive community for the future.

“With its multicultural, intergenerational community and local talent, South Hedland is the ideal place to develop accessible amenities and safe open spaces for people of all ages to come together to celebrate, share and discover.

“Sensitively programmed and landscaped, an inclusive multifaceted and welcoming public space is something which benefits the whole South Hedland community.

“As a mixed-use community asset serving a range of demographics and purposes throughout the year, developing The Commons presents an opportunity for a new zone for outdoor style community engagement in South Hedland. Over the next five years, this area could evolve into a nexus for activities and programming catering to families, school groups and the local community.

“Landscaping and programming in the area will concentrate on encouraging greater visitation, better social interaction and amenity for the South Hedland community with works scheduled to commence in March 2022.”
