Safety Comes First When Using Waste Services

Published on Thursday, 8 November 2018 at 9:04:40 AM

Residents across Hedland are reminded of the importance of not placing flammable or prohibited objects in their Council issued kerbside bins.

The message comes following the occurrence of a fire in the back of a Town of Port Hedland Waste Collection Truck yesterday afternoon, caused by a collected bin’s contents.

There are a number of items which are prohibited for disposal in kerbside bins, due to the safety risks they pose to works crews and drivers in transit.

These items include:

  • Hot or burning materials, including ashes and coals
  • Household hazardous waste – including paint, acid, fire extinguishers, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, gas cylinders, batteries, chemicals and heavy metals
  • Explosive material – including flares and ammunition
  • Electrical and electronic equipment – including Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) or similar
  • Medical waste, including needles
  • Sewage
  • Asbestos
  • Anything that stops the lid from closing

Should you wish to dispose of industrial waste, please visit the South Hedland Landfill at the end of North Circular Road.

Please click here to access a list of items and materials the Landfill will accept.
