Safety a Priority for Stevens Street Residents

Published on Wednesday, 11 September 2019 at 4:49:55 PM

At a Special Council Meeting held last night Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling has decided to revoke a previous Council decision and relocate residents of the Stevens Street Site to safe alternative accommodation.

In 2018 the Town commissioned a building audit of the Site, and reports concluded that several of the residential buildings were structurally unsound and unsafe for human habitation, and that the replacement of entire buildings would be less costly than upgrades and maintenance.

In December 2018 Council resolved to cease relocation of the residents, prepare an emergency evacuation plan and request quotation for remediation works to bring the Site up to an acceptable standard.

The Town of Port Hedland has since sought quotations for remediation works, including a second structural engineering review of the building as well as additional legal advice regarding insurance coverage and risk mitigation issues for the Site that impacts tenants, all visitors and all rate-payers.

Following last night’s decision, the Town and Department of Communities will work with residents to offer suitable alternative accommodation in Port and South Hedland.

Hon. Commissioner Riebeling said that residents’ wellbeing and safety was paramount during any future relocation.

“This facility has a long history in town, which many occupants have proudly called home for many years.

“However, we are now at a stage where the structure is not fit for purpose and places unacceptably high risks on the health and safety of residents, all of who are valued members of our community.

“I understand how stressful and difficult this has been. However, we cannot take a ‘finger’s crossed’ approach to the safety of tenants, visitors, employees and contractors.

“The Town of Port Hedland is considering options for the site, including rebuilding senior’s accommodation. We will be advocating the State Government to consider this opportunity in the future.”
