Public Comment Invited to Strengthen Hedland's Community Safety Plan

Published on Monday, 29 July 2019 at 10:03:09 AM

The Town of Port Hedland’s Community Safety Plan 2019-2022 is now open for public comment, a comprehensive plan which puts community at the centre of future safety initiatives.

Funded by BHP and driven by the work of the Hedland Community Safety Advisory Forum (HCSAF), a number of actions have been developed for stakeholders.

Working towards improved personal safety, safer streets and open spaces, resilient communities and powerful partnerships are the plan’s overarching goals.

The plan’s governance group structure identifies decision makers, a decision making framework and action implementers to take in a three year time frame.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebling said the plan was an important step in improving Hedland’s crime and safety statistics.

“I’d like to thank BHP for their ongoing commitment and investment in community safety in Port Hedland, which has made this plan possible.

“I’d like to acknowledge the work of the HCSAF, made up of grassroots community organisations, who have collaborated across societal sectors to inform this plan.

“Hedland faces a number of challenges in the community safety space, such as statistically higher rates of crime and recidivism than the state’s metropolitan centres.

“This plan is grounded in more holistic practice, recognising the need to move beyond punitive measures and understand that crime often stems from social circumstance.

“As a Town, our role is to assist in the delivery of this plan by actively engaging with key stakeholders, monitoring the plan’s effectiveness and providing improvements.

“Once this plan is adopted, it will become Hedland’s most comprehensive strategy in building a safer and more liveable community for all families.”
