Proposed closure of Powell Road level crossing set to improve road user safety

Published on Friday, 31 January 2020 at 1:42:00 PM

Road user safety is the driving factor for the proposed closure of the Powell Road level crossing, located between Hamilton and Dalton Road.

A significant number of incidents and near misses occur at the level crossing annually, with an identified need to separate regular and wide load traffic flows into Wedgefield estate.

The closure of comparable level crossings and construction of the Wallwork Road and Boodarie bridges have improved road user safety.

The potential closure of the level crossing will take into consideration public feedback, and is dependent on final approvals from Local and State Government.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the application detailed alternative travel routes for road users, should the crossing be closed.

“Making our roads safer is a priority shared by the Town and BHP, with this particular level crossing experiencing particularly high near-miss rates.

“Should the level crossing be closed, the alternative route from South Hedland to Wedgefield over the Wallwork Road Bridge is actually 0.3km shorter than the Powell Road level crossing route.

“The Wallwork Road Bridge was a significant infrastructure project completed in 2014, with its ambitious four lane birth scope the result of a strong partnership between State Government and BHP.

“At this stage, we are assessing the application from BHP to close the Powell Road level crossing, and I invite members of the community to have their say on the proposal.

“I acknowledge that this level crossing is frequented by many local residents and businesses, with a potential closure impacting established travel routes.

“The regional road toll is higher than metropolitan centres, so identifying and rectifying unsafe level crossings is one way to help close this gap.

“Importantly, traffic counts obtained by Main Roads WA find that the alternative routes can safely manage the additional traffic flows.

“Dependent on final approval and public consultation, road closure activities would begin in the first half of this year. The closed crossing would be fenced off and gated, with the proposed design still allowing oversized loads to cross when required.

“I intend to update the community on the consultation process and provide any relevant updates moving forward.”

Feedback submissions are invited on the proposed Powell Road Closure via eplanning@porthedland.wa.gov.au or by mail to PO Box 41, Port Hedland 6721.
