New Community Grants Aim to Activate Hedland

Published on Thursday, 20 December 2018 at 2:46:43 PM

A renewed focus on providing targeted grant funding to diverse community organisations has been achieved with the Town of Port Hedland’s Community Grants Program.

12 individual grants have been developed to reflect the importance of the arts, sport, events, space activation, tourism, commerce and youth development in shaping life in Hedland.

Council passed the motion in October to revise the previous Funding and Donations Policy, which was originally adopted in January 2011.

The new Program categorises grants into four streams: annual, arts and culture, sport and recreation and community activation.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the 12 grants provided more targeted funding to a greater cross section of Hedland.

“This program achieves a number of objectives, including fostering more participation in communal life, activating public spaces and supporting our young people to reach their potential.

“We have listened to feedback this year about the importance of the Town supporting small business and tourism, with the Business and Tourism Innovation Grant.

“The Public Space Activation Grant and Special Events Grant are also open to businesses, encouraging innovative thinking, expanded operations and a stronger local economy.

“This grant will help the promotional efforts of attracting visitors to Hedland to experience our unique cultural history and place in the Pilbara.

“The Seed Funding Grant gives new or struggling non-for-profit organisations a leg up in establishing their operations to remain viable into the future.

“I encourage everyone to peruse the grants guide on our website, which provides an outline of each of the new grants.”

The grants open now are Community Sport Grant, Artist Development Grant, Athlete Development Grant and the Friendly Neighbourhood Grant. The remaining grants will be released throughout 2019.
