March ATSI Forum Keeps Mental Health in Mind

Published on Friday, 8 March 2019 at 8:24:22 AM

Community members are invited to the next Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Forum, which will be held on Monday 25 March from 9am – 1pm in Lotteries House.

This month’s Forum will focus on addressing two Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage (OID) indicators: mental health and preventable hospitalisations.

Mayor Camilo Blanco encouraged locals to attend the interactive Forum, which will encourage discussion and idea exchange.

“Mental health is such an important issue: it is estimated that 20% of Australians aged 16 to 85 will experience a mental illness in any given year.

“Almost 45% of Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime, with the 18 to 24 year old age group most at risk.

“In order to proactively address these statistics, we need community groups and grassroots organisations to work collaboratively to maximise their impact.

“Fantastic work is already being done in this space locally, however there’s always room to form new connections and find new ways of OID.”

Members of the public, local agencies and groups with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff members are encouraged to appoint these employees where possible to attend.

If you have any questions, please contact Maureen Kelly OAM on 0428 567 167 or Town of Port Hedland Community Engagement Officer, Sheridan Green on 08 9158 9366.

If you wish to attend, please RSVP to Sheridan Green by 5pm Friday 22 March.
