The Town has recognised a number of outstanding Hedland locals and community organisations this morning at the 2021 Community Citizen of the Year Awards.

The Port Hedland Awards are made possible by Horizon Power, ITOCHU Minerals & Energy Australia, the Port Hedland RSL and Roy Hill.

Graeme Hunter is the Community Citizen of the Year, in recognition of his work as the Captain of the Port Hedland Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service. Mr Hunter plays an active role in fire prevention, rescue and community education and safety.

Doris Teufel is the Senior Community Citizen of the Year, in recognition of her work raising community awareness of Port Hedland’s intertidal reef for over 12 years. Ms Teufel conducts regular free reef walks for the public, educating and guiding locals and tourists.

Baydon Rae is the Youth Community Citizen of the Year. At nine years of age, he is passionate about the environment and inspires other children to grow their own food. He is an active member in the community garden.

Hai’s Coffee Community Breakfast Fundraiser is this year’s recipient of the Active Citizenship Award. This Fundraiser has raised in excess of $10,000 annually for local not-for-profit organisations and Port Hedland charities for the past four years.

“First and foremost, I would like to congratulate everyone who was nominated for all your hard work in making our Town a better place to call home.

“Australia Day is our time to reflect on the diversity of our community and thank those who selflessly give of their time throughout the year.

“These awards are one of my favourite events on the Calendar, as we get to shine a spotlight on the volunteer efforts that may go under the radar.

“Congratulations to all the Award recipients for making our Town proud.”
