Hedland, let's kerb our waste with kerbside recycling

Published on Monday, 1 February 2021 at 3:44:13 PM

The Town of Port Hedland and Cleanaway will be introducing a kerbside recycling service in the local government area from March, delivering on 93% community support for the initiative.

Cleanaway will be delivering kerbside recycling bins to households in late February and early March, with the first collections occurring in March.

Recyclables will be transported to a Cleanaway waste facility to be baled, then transported to Cleanaway's Materials Recycling Facility.

Recycling does not have to be complicated, simply-5 it! Recyclable materials include flattened cardboard, non-shredded paper, glass, rigid plastic and steel/aluminium cans. Items should always be kept loose and rinsed prior to disposal.

Items which cannot be recycled in the yellow lidded bin include vegetation and food waste, rubbish, nappies, plastic bags and other soft plastics, polystyrene, textiles and clothing, footwear, gas bottles, flares, batteries, aerosols and other hazardous materials.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the introduction of kerbside recycling in Hedland to improve the Town’s environmental sustainability.

“The Town and Cleanaway are introducing kerbside recycling from March, delivering on passionate community support for more sustainable waste management in Hedland.

“My fellow Elected Members and I are proud that the Town will be joining most local governments already delivering kerbside recycling, a staple in communities across the country.

“We’ve launched the Let’s Kerb our Waste campaign to raise awareness in the community of the right way to recycle and the importance of not contaminating kerbside recycling bins. This campaign will highlight the items which can and cannot be recycled and your collection weeks.

“Over the next few months, expect to see advertising, information stalls and letterbox mail which will tell you more about how recycling is working in Hedland.”
