The Town of Port Hedland has celebrated the work of outstanding citizens during its Community Citizen of the Year Awards this morning.
Similar events are held across Australia as local governments take the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution and celebrate community engagement of people within their communities.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said the awards were one of his favourite events on the annual calendar.
“What truly makes Port Hedland special is the work and dedication of volunteers and other community minded people,” Mayor Carter said.
“I sincerely thank everyone who chooses to use their time enriching the social fabric of Port Hedland.”
There were three categories celebrated in this year’s awards; Community Citizen of the Year, Community Citizen of the Year – Youth, and the Active Citizen Award.
Michelle Cockie was awarded Community Citizen of the Year in recognition of her outstanding service to the Hedland community.
Beau Keller was awarded Community Citizen of the Year – Youth for his demonstrable community spirit.
And Lisa’s Kangaroo Retreat was the recipient of the 2023 Active Citizenship Award, which aims to recognise a group doing outstanding work.
“Congratulations to those awarded this year, and to everyone who was nominated. I look forward to seeing the benefits you’re able to achieve for Port Hedland as your enthusiasm for our community continues,” Mayor Carter said.
