Gym at Gratwick Aquatic Centre to get a revamp

New Year’s resolutions will be easier to keep in 2020 with an expansion of the Town of Port Hedland’s fitness offering.

The gym at the Gratwick Aquatic Centre will be completely overhauled, after the tender for the project was awarded to MWJ Building at the December Council Meeting.

It is estimated that the works, which will begin on Friday 24 January, will render the facility closed for a minimum of three months while refurbishment and expansion works are undertaken.

In a separate, but related project, new equipment will also be purchased for the refurbished gym.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the building’s upgrade was a demonstration of the Town’s commitment to offering a high quality product for the community to enjoy.

“The refurbishment will include a significant increase in space than currently exists, which will allow people to workout more freely.

“The Hedland community has always shown a strong interest in sports, recreation and fitness and we need to be able to continue to nurture that culture.

“The upgrade at the Gratwick fitness facility is just the beginning of Hedland-wide improvements to sport and recreation spaces which will take place in the near-term.”

Last year, three masterplans which detailed the upgrades at the South Hedland Integrated Sports Complex, McGregor St Sports Precinct and JD Hardie Youth Zone were endorsed by Council.
