Future Sustainability the Focus for 2018 Waste Strategy

Council has endorsed the implementation of the 2018 Town of Port Hedland Waste Strategy and its recommendations that will support a more sustainable future for our community.

The Waste Strategy consists of three strategic reports: the South Hedland Landfill Facility Site Master Plan 2018, the Town of Port Hedland Waste Management Strategy 2018 and the Waste Management Services Assessment.

In January 2018, the Town of Port Hedland undertook a comprehensive assessment on how waste management processes could be improved and brought in line with community expectations.

Key outcomes of the assessment included implementing a kerbside recycling service, long-term community waste management planning, and encouraging greater community engagement with waste management.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the strategy was an important step forward in the Town’s commitment to more sustainable practices.

“For years, Hedland residents have expressed a real desire for a kerbside recycling service which reduces our ecological footprint.

“I’m pleased we now have a tangible plan in which to move forward on this, with food and organic recycling plans also on the horizon.

“The Strategy’s recommendations also include a community-recycling centre, siting for a container deposit scheme (CDS) recover point, and progressing with a landfill closure plan and new landfill site selection study”.

“The strategy has also identified several areas where significant efficiencies can be achieved through an improved service delivery model for kerbside waste recovery”.

“There is an expectation in the community that we constantly review our processes and identify ways we can save rate payer money, which is what the adoption of this strategy will result in.”
