The Premier Mark McGowan and all State Cabinet Ministers were in Port Hedland earlier this week for Community Cabinet, an initiative of the McGowan Government to foster greater engagement between local leaders and the State Government.

Mayor Camilo Blanco, Deputy Mayor Louise Newbery and Town of Port Hedland CEO David Pentz welcomed the opportunity to meet with the Premier as well as Minister for Local Government, the Hon. David Templeman; the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon. Sue Ellery; and the Minister for Child Protection, Women’s Interests, Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence and Community Services, the Hon. Simone Frances McGurk.

A Community Reception was held on Sunday afternoon, hosted by Member for the Pilbara Kevin Michel and attended by Premier and State Cabinet Ministers.

More than 100 representatives from the local business, not-for-profit and community sectors were in attendance to discuss governance, education, training and social issues.

Mayor Camilo Blanco commended the initiative as a vital step in strengthening the relationship between Port Hedland and the State Government.

“I’m pleased the Premier and members of his Cabinet took the time to meet with Hedland locals, listening to their concerns and explaining their plans for the region.

“People voiced their concerns about the Spoilbank Marina, development of the West End and the Government’s plans to tackle social issues and healthcare in the community.

“There was common agreement on the need to invest in education and training which gets people job ready for positions unique to the Pilbara, such as specialist mining jobs.

“It was good to see a respectful discussion focussed on the issues that matter to Hedland, and the kind of Town we want for our kids."
