Coastal Hazard Risk Management Plan (CHRMAP) Mitigates Future Threats

Published on Friday, 3 May 2019 at 12:37:24 PM

Elected Members have voted to adopt the final Port Hedland CHRMAP, providing a future framework for the Town to mitigate the risks associated with flooding and coastal erosion in the Port Hedland townsite.

This vote enables the Town to commence the implementation of CHRMAP, which was informed by extensive community feedback over 18 months.

CHRMAP identifies land and assets within the Port Hedland townsite which are vulnerable to coastal erosion and flooding, providing a long term adaptation framework.

Importantly, full implementation will require sourcing external funds from State or Federal Government, as well as industry.

Mayor Camilo Blanco welcomed the vote, pointing to the importance of taking a pro-active approach to environmental risk management.

“With this vote, the Town is now in a position to take preliminary steps in order to implement the CHRMAP’s actions.

“This includes the preparation of a foreshore management plan, investigating sand replenishment options for high risk areas and advocating for external funding opportunities through grant applications.

“As a town, we are now in a stronger position to plan for the realities of climate change, such as the CHRMAP informing decisions on development applications for years to come.

“I’d like to thank everyone who provided feedback on the plan during the consultation period: your feedback has been invaluable.

“I encourage all levels of government, industry and residents to understand the importance of managing the risks posed by coastal erosion and flooding.

“I look forward to working constructively with Town Officers and the Town’s stakeholders to ensure the full scope of CHRMAPs actions are realised."
