Childcare pressures eased with refurbishment tender award

Published on Friday, 1 November 2019 at 9:49:42 AM

Council have awarded the tender for Port Hedland Library, and South Hedland TAFE refurbishment works to MJW Building for a projected total contract value of $1,013,533.00 (ex. GST), securing additional space for childcare service delivery.

Port Hedland Library’s refurbishment, costing a projected $273,641.00 (ex. GST), will be paid for through the Town’s budget. Local grassroots impact organisation Hedland Collective will fund the TAFE refurbishment, costing a projected $739,892.00 (ex. GST).

This decision follows Council’s February 2019 endorsement of action to tackle childcare placement shortages, with Port Hedland Library and the TAFE site in South Hedland identified as suitable venues.

In August 2019, Council endorsed the closure and relocation of Port Hedland Library to transition into space for childcare service delivery early next year.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the tender award was the next step in cementing the Town’s commitment to providing more childcare space in Hedland.

“I’d like to thank the Hedland Collective for committing funds to refurbish part of the South Hedland TAFE campus into childcare space, benefitting our local families.

“The Hedland Collective has been instrumental in advocating for Hedland’s families, who have faced years of chronic childcare shortages.

“The Town will be funding the cost of the Port Hedland Library’s refurbishment works, which will lay the foundation for a childcare service provider to activate the space early next year.

“Our goal is to ease pressure on existing local providers and assist in accommodating the nearly 400 waitlisted places in Hedland.

“Although not traditionally the jurisdiction of local government, in recent years our annual perception surveys have outlined just how important this issue is to local families.
