Sutherland Street shared footpath extension works step forward

Published on Tuesday, 7 September 2021 at 9:56:57 AM

Site earthworks for the Sutherland Street shared footpath extension have started, with construction set to occur from Thursday 16 September until early October 2021.

These works are a result of Council’s endorsement of the footpath extension at the June 2021 Ordinary Council Meeting. This followed a decision in March 2021 to request further community consultation be undertaken by the Town to inform Council.

The footpath will correct a missing link in Hedland’s overall pathway network, connecting The West End district to Sutherland Street and the future Spoilbank Marina precinct.

A community wide survey conducted earlier this year found 83% of respondents supporting better connectivity between the West End and the Marina.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed works starting on the footpath extension.

“I acknowledge the footpath extension has both supporters and detractors, however once constructed, the whole community can enjoy better connectivity between the West End and Sutherland Street.

“The broader plan includes the construction of beach access to protect Port Hedland’s sensitive dune environment, a valuable coastal asset. The installation of rock bollards in areas along the path will restrict vehicle access, further protecting the dune system.

“I’d like to thank everyone who provided their perspectives on the matter earlier this year during the Town’s extensive community consultation process, which involved focus groups, surveys and letters.

“The contractors undertaking the works were selected using the Town’s preferred supplier panel, in line with the Town’s procurement and purchasing policies.

“I look forward to seeing the completed footpath extension later this year.”

Community members are advised to please be mindful of workers and signage in the area and do not enter construction sites for the duration of works.

The footpath extension is projected to open to the public in November 2021.
