A state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility which will be a hub of activity for the Hedland community was officially opened on Saturday.
Minister for Sport and Recreation, Honourable David A Templeman MLA, officially opened the Milpaku Kuma ‘Coming Together’ / Port Hedland Community Centre to the public on Saturday morning.
The official opening coincided with the first race meeting of the Port Hedland Turf Club season.
The $19.5 million facility was funded thanks to a $10 million contribution from the Western Australian Government and $9.5 million commitment from the Town of Port Hedland.
Mayor Peter Carter said the Town was committed to providing quality amenities to increase liveability and attract new residents to Hedland.
“First-class amenities that benefit the community are a key part of our vision to increase the residential population in Hedland,” Mayor Carter said.
“This community centre will bring people together – with community and sporting groups being able to utilise it. It will also play that vital role as a public shelter in emergencies such as cyclones.”
The two-storey multi-function centre features a large function space on the first floor which can be divided into two rooms through an operable wall. There are four community spaces on the ground floor which can be opened into two large rooms as they are also divided by operable walls.
There are two commercial-grade kitchens, shaded and undercover viewing and gathering areas, changerooms and an integrated judges’ box/broadcast tower at the finish line with TAB room and stewards room.
Construction on the community centre started last year.
