Heath Black Talks Mental Health on the Field and in the Boardroom

Published on Monday, 12 August 2019 at 2:49:35 PM

The Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce Inc.’s and the Town of Port Hedland’s September Business Luncheon will feature former AFL player, motivational speaker and author Heath Black.

To coincide with 2019’s R U OK? Day, Heath will delve into a tumultuous and ultimately triumphant past of conquering his inner demons on and off the sporting field.

A former player for the Fremantle Dockers, Heath has dealt with the challenges of anxiety, depression, separation, divorce, alcoholism and termination of employment.

Self-described as hitting rock bottom in 2009 while playing for The Dockers, subsequent years have seen the former sports star transform into an Ambassador for Headspace and active facilitator of well being workshops.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the Luncheon was a prime opportunity for stakeholders across the community to take strength from Heath’s story.

“R U Ok Day raises suicide prevention awareness and gives us all the chance to stop, reflect and reach out to someone who may be going through a tough time.

“Heath has lived a full life across multiple professional spheres, rising to the top tier of AFL and now spearheading the mental health and wellbeing message into all facets of society.

“The experience of self-destruction and addiction is familiar to many, transcending social divides and impacting the lives of everyday people from every background.

“As a regional town, Hedland faces statistically higher rates of substance abuse and mental health issues, with a remote lifestyle and tough conditions taking their toll.

“Heath brings a unique perspective to this conversation, sharing his personal insights and first-hand experience dealing with complex life issues.

“Hedland’s economy is diversifying, with the resources industry continuing to dominate however smaller, entrepreneurial hubs of activity are starting to pop up and all stakeholders face challenges.

“Whether you’re just starting out in business, a resource sector worker or member of a community organisation, this session will be an invaluable and inspiring experience.”
