E-Waste contributes to positive environmental impact

Published on Tuesday, 26 May 2020 at 2:44:13 PM

Hedland can achieve significant environmental benefits by recycling electronic waste, diverting material from landfill, and recycling precious metals.

TechCollect currently recycles the Town’s e-waste and measures the positive impacts of e-waste recycling.

In 2018/19, TechCollect recycled 808 kilograms of e-waste from the South Hedland Landfill.

If residents and businesses continue to do the right thing, we can increase this number.

The e-waste collected at South Hedland Landfill in 2018/19 was the equivalent of: planting 14 trees, 36 days of household electricity use, 8 days of household water use and equivalent to removing 1,370km of old diesel truck travel.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP encouraged residents, community organisations and business to keep up the good work.

“I’d like to thank TechCollect for their work in partnering with the Town in helping our jurisdiction reduce the amount of eWaste which ends up in landfill.

“Electronic waste is not biodegradable and takes thousands of years to dissipate, so anything which isn’t recycled further contributes to the global waste crisis

“Producing any manufactured piece of equipment is energy intensive, so the more e-waste we can divert from landfill, the more we’re contributing to a brighter future for us all.

“We’re fortunate to live in a local community which is so engaged with this issue, with the Care for Hedland Environmental Association working with the Town to establish the localised container deposit scheme.

“The release of TechCollect's positive statistics should further motivate us all to properly dispose of all e-waste material.”
