A music festival will be held over two weekends in August next year after Town of Port Hedland councillors voted for the concept at Wednesday night’s meeting.
The live music experience at the Civic Gardens in Port Hedland will feature a Friday DJ after-work sundowner event, a Saturday major headliner ticketed event and a Sunday free family-friendly live music picnic.
The concept will be repeated over two weekends.
Mayor Peter Carter said there had been strong community support for a music festival featuring headlining acts after the North West Fest was cancelled in 2020 and 2022 due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19.
“The North West Fest was incredibly popular and we have been able to attract renowned artists such as Wolfmother, Missy Higgins, Amy Shark and Spiderbait in the past,” Mayor Carter said.
“We know there is a thirst for a live-music experience in Hedland and we believe this festival will attract visitors from throughout the region and the State.
“This event will really bring Hedland to life.”
Councillors also endorsed two other major events for 2023 – the South Hedland 50th celebration of gazettal in May and the Spinifex Spree Carnival in July.
The South Hedland celebration will feature a community street art festival to include painting up to eight street art murals in the town square.
They will include stories of South Hedland and be co-designed by professional street artists, local young people and community organisations. The intent of this event is to celebrate the rich history and cultural pride of South Hedland.
The Spinifex carnival is one of the most popular events on the Hedland calendar, attracting 10,000 locals and tourists over two days. Next year's event will be even more exciting with the addition of a Spiegeltent and live shows such as cabaret, comedy and creative dance performances.
Additional entertainment will include a variety of family-friendly activities such as carnival rides, live music, children’s entertainment, community and business stalls, food trucks and truck alley machinery exhibitions.
“The Town is committed to providing a wide range of major events for the community to enjoy,” Mayor Carter said.
“Having high-quality events like this helps create a thriving, resilient and inclusive community and promotes Hedland as an attractive region for people to want to work and live.”
