Town of Port Hedland Approves Port Hedland International Airport Development Extension

Published on Tuesday, 18 December 2018 at 5:34:16 PM

A refined terminal passenger capacity scope, higher capital works standards, and a redevelopment deadline extension for the Port Hedland International Airport (PHIA) were deliverables approved at last night’s Special Council Meeting.

The passed motion delivers greater clarity and certainty for the scope of works to be completed by Lessee AMP Capital Investors Ltd and Infrastructure Capital Group Ltd, who will now have until 11 March 2022 to complete the PHIA terminal redevelopment.

Further, the definition of capital works has been amended to stipulate the final development must be able to accommodate 450,000 passengers per annum, yet be designed to accommodate a potential 700,000 into the future.

The expected standard of works has now increased to meet the optimum level outlined in the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Improved Level of Service Concept.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the terminal redevelopment was a core driver for Hedland’s future economic growth.

“I’m pleased Council passed the motion to refine the scope of works which are going to take place, recognising revised population projections and the realities of delivering a project of this magnitude.

“Since granting the long term lease in March 2016, we have maintained a strong relationship with the PHIA to ensure the development reflects the needs of our region and is completed to the highest standards.

“Council endorsed PHIA to deliver detailed capital works plans by the first half of 2019 which will then be incorporated into the Draft Masterplan.

“Further, I’m pleased that the PHIA intends to prioritise airside works which will improve safety, runway congestion and the overall passenger experience.

“I look forward to maintaining a positive dialogue with PHIA and viewing the Draft Masterplan.”
