Council has endorsed the Town’s Youth Development Plan 2022-25 (The Plan), a strategic plan grounded in 6,120 ideas and opinions contributed by the local community to make Hedland a place where all young people feel included, supported and inspired for the future.

Formulation of the Plan was undertaken by the Town’s Community Development Team and facilitated by the Bank of I.D.E.A.S. Nearly 1,200 conversations took place between July 2021 and February 2022 with over 2,700 young people contributing their ideas and opinions.

Seven guiding principles provide context for the Plan’s actions and initiatives: youth empowerment; social justice; equity and inclusion; collaboration and partnerships; asset and opportunity and cultural competence.

The Plan is the first youth strategy developed by the Town, setting the foundations for a longer-term, community-wide youth strategy.

Council seeks to serve as an advocate, facilitator, partner, funder and provider throughout the Plan’s delivery, actively empowering young people to be successful in education, work and life.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the endorsement of the Plan, recognising the Council’s central role in delivering positive outcomes for Hedland’s young people.

“The Town’s Youth Development Plan 2022-25 is about making sure our town’s young people experience a real sense of safety, belonging, wellbeing and resilience for the future."

“Extensive community consultation undertaken to prepare the Plan resulted in 6,120 ideas and opinions being contributed, reflecting the importance of grounding our decisions in the sentiments and aspirations of the local community."

“We want young people to feel prepared and excited about the transition from school to work, training and further education; to have access to a range of safe spaces, events, programs and facilities that meet their needs and aspirations; to have real opportunities to shape their lives and contribute to their town’s future."

“The intention is for $250,000 to be allocated in the Town’s 2022/23 budget to implement the Plan’s year one actions."

“I’d like to thank the Town staff, facilitators from the Bank of I.D.E.A.S and everyone in the community who contributed their thoughts and opinions for this Plan.”
