Proposed Closure of Powell Road level crossing (Closed)

• A significant number of incidents and near misses occur at the level crossing annually, with an identified need to separate regular and wide load traffic flows into Wedgefield estate.
• The closure of comparable level crossings and construction of the Wallwork Road and Boodarie bridges have improved road user safety.
• The potential closure of the level crossing will take into consideration public feedback, and is dependent on a recommendation from Local to State Government which takes into account public submissions.
• Should the level crossing be closed, the alternative route from South Hedland to Wedgefield over the Wallwork Road Bridge is 0.3km shorter than the Powell Road level crossing route.
• Dependent on final approval, road closure activities would begin in the first half of 2020. The closed crossing would be fenced off and gated, with roundabouts constructed and the proposed design allowing oversized loads to cross when required.
