The atmosphere was electric at South Hedland Skatepark on Friday afternoon as enthusiastic skateboarders, BMX and scooter riders got to officially try out the refurbished facility for the first time.
Hundreds of people packed the skatepark to celebrate the official opening of the world-class facility, which features an impressive shade structure, LED lights, art installation and audio-visual capability.
Some of Australia’s top professional trick BMX riders and skateboarders – including James Pease, Brodie Jarrett, Callan Mansfield, Ethan Copeland, Jacman Hinss, Josh Weribone, Kieran Reilly and Nixen Osborne (who grew up in the Pilbara) – wowed the crowd with their skills and passed on some tips to local enthusiasts.
The skatepark initially opened in 2015 with 3450sq/m of rideable space and no shade. This was part of a $4 million investment which included a $2.3 million contribution from BHP.
After the construction of the shade structure, which was completed in October, the $7.2 million skatepark now has 4500sq/m of rideable space, 2400sq/m of which is shaded.
Mayor Peter Carter, who was joined by Member for Pilbara Kevin Michel for the official opening, said the skatepark was a terrific investment for the South Hedland community.
“The Town of Port Hedland is committed to providing quality facilities for the community to enjoy and the addition of the shade structure will ensure it will be popular all-year round,” Mayor Carter said.
“I’ve got no doubt the skatepark will also be an attraction that draws people from all over the State and Australia to South Hedland.”
A range of activities including skateboard, scooter and BMX demonstrations; street art; chalk drawing competition; dance and music performances; and a free barbecue made the official opening a wonderful community event.
“It’s great to see so many youngsters and families here today enjoying the activities and most importantly, this brilliant world-class skatepark,” Mayor Carter said.
