South Hedland Library will once again come alive with community spirit, activities and connection for the annual Indigenous Literacy Day event.

The Town of Port Hedland Libraries, with support from Orica Mining Services have come together for the third year, to deliver this free, family-friendly event.

Last year's event welcomed over 150 attendees, and this year, the Town of Port Hedland Libraries team aims to draw an even larger crowd to enjoy a vibrant morning of engaging activities, live music, local stallholders, and a complimentary sausage sizzle.

Khristle Barr, the Town’s Manager of Events, Arts, and Culture, highlighted her team’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where attendees can make connections, have meaningful conversations, and learn from one another.

“Understanding the power of literacy is crucial for nurturing vibrant, healthy, and sustainable communities."

"Identifying the need to reach isolated areas and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, the Town is committed to promoting events that support community access to literacy.” Khristle said.

The event will be hosted outside, under the shady trees at South Hedland Library on Wednesday 3 September at 9:30am.

Indigenous Literacy Day is a national event of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation that aims to raise awareness about the literacy challenges faced by remote Indigenous communities, whilst also highlighting the importance of preserving Indigenous languages and stories for future generations.
