National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn more about our shared histories, cultures and achievements.

This year's theme, Bridging Now to Next, aims to promote a more unified and inclusive nation by reflecting on the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

There will be a range of free events and activities for the whole community this Reconciliation Week, including Indigenous Australians’ arts & crafts, and a traditional Aboriginal dance workshop and performance.

As part of the week’s celebrations, the Town of Port Hedland also invites the community to an evening of music under the stars with multi-award-winning artists Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse on Friday, 30 May at the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub.

This free, family-friendly, event will run from 5:30pm-8:00pm and additionally feature local performer, David Clarke, and a free BBQ for the whole community.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter encourages all members of the Hedland community to come together and join in the festivities.

"Grab your favourite picnic rug or camping chair, and bring along the whole family for a great night out," Mayor Carter said.

"It will be a great opportunity for all of us to come together and celebrate the terrific community spirit we have here in Hedland.

"The Town is committed to closing the gaps in Hedland by improving understanding and respect between traditional owners and the broader community."

This year's National Reconciliation Week events and activities will be presented by a range of local organisations across the community, including the Town of Port Hedland, Matt Dann Theatre & Cinema, Wirraka Maya Aboriginal Health Service and the collaborations of the Hedland Youth Stakeholder Action Group (HYSAG).

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June. For more information on events and initiatives in Hedland, go to hed.la/nowtonext
