The Town of Port Hedland acknowledges the extraordinary contributions of Arnold Carter, who has sadly passed away.
Arnold was a much-loved and respected community member whose influence has shaped the fabric of our town for over six decades.
Arriving in Port Hedland in 1962, Arnold quickly became a driving force in the region’s development. His work with Mt Goldsworthy Mining Associates was instrumental in establishing the Port of Port Hedland as a critical export hub in the 1960s. Tasked with project managing the launch of iron ore exports from the Pilbara, Arnold played a key role in setting the foundation for one of Australia’s most significant industries.
Arnold’s dedication extended far beyond industry. He served on Council for 34 years - one of the longest serving councillors at the Town of Port Hedland – and from 1979 to 1985 he served as Shire President. During his tenure, Arnold provided strong leadership during a time of rapid change and growth and always put the community first in any decisions he made.
He also gave his time generously to numerous local organisations including Port Hedland Marine Rescue, Port Hedland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Turf Club, and the Historical Society.
Over the years, Arnold lived through 29 cyclones, owned 26 local businesses, and built an extraordinary network of connections and friendships. He married his beloved wife Frances in 1963 at St Cecilia’s Church on Edgar Street, a moment that began a lifelong partnership deeply rooted in the Port Hedland community.
It is said that you’d be hard-pressed to find someone in town who doesn’t know Arnold. His lasting legacy is seen in the infrastructure, community groups and countless lives he helped shape.
As we prepare to say goodbye to one of Port Hedland’s greats, the Town extends its heartfelt thoughts to Frances and her family during this time.
