At last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Town of Port Hedland Elected Members endorsed a new three-year partnership with Care for Hedland Environmental Association, continuing a highly successful collaboration delivering sustainability, conservation and compliance outcomes across the region.

The Town will invest $150,000 over the next three years to support Care for Hedland’s important environmental work.

The funding builds on a partnership established in 2024, ensuring the ongoing delivery of initiatives are achieving strong outcomes for both the community and the environment.

Mayor Jacinta Behrend said the partnership had already made a significant contribution.

“This partnership is making a real difference in our community. Whether it’s recycling more beaches, or getting people involved in local sustainability projects, you can see the positive impact.” she said.

“Care for Hedland has done an incredible job supporting the community along this important journey. They’ve found ways to make sustainability practical, positive and something everyone can be part of.”

Since its inception, the partnership has delivered significant results, including more than 1.43 million tonnes of litter collected through Adopt-A-Spot, over 9.5 million containers recycled, and more than 25,000 people engaged in sustainability initiatives.

Programs such as Captain Clean Up in schools, the Sustainable Living Show Day, the Repair Café, and the Great Gardens Competition have helped make sustainability practical and accessible for locals.

“What I really love about this work is that it meets people where they are, at home, at school, and out in the community,” Mayor Behrend said.

“It’s about simple, everyday actions that add up to something really meaningful.”

The partnership will also continue important conservation work, including the monitoring of flatback turtles at Cemetery Beach, supporting the protection of this significant local species.

The renewed agreement ensures momentum is maintained, supporting a cleaner, more sustainable future for Port Hedland.
